New Zealand Vintage Kart National Run

It has come and gone,

For those that were unable to attend you have missed a great enjoyable weekend!

Some ventured out Friday after Blossom 2011 regulars’ practice, after erecting tents etc.

Saturday dawned fine but cold, and 30+ vintage karts plus more drivers fronted for karting fun in Hawkes Bay!

Was great to see the variety amongst the karts on show form Dave Pascoe's early 1960's high wheeler to Kerry Radford's English Spyder 250cc class iv.

From Christchurch came the "Old Farts" group of karters, lead by Robin Wilkinson, with John and Alan Milligan, Kerry Radford and George Hayward.

John brought his newly acquired Mac Minarelli with Yamaha KT100 power, as well as his Puma DAP twin, George his Cobra by Alan Pithie, for Alan to see it run for the first time at Roys Hill Raceway with twin Parilla's. New recruit to Vintage Karting Peter Hollobon showed up with his "ride on lawn mower" masquerading as a Dart /McCulloch, he shared with Paul Chricton.

At age 84 Snow Hyndman had a run in Sharon Jenkinson Dart, including a lap with chequered flag, awesome sight!

Up from the Manawatu on Saturday came the Fage team with their recently completed Swiss Hutless/Parilla TT75, gee was it a beautiful piece! Deseveredly winning the WASA!

Doing double duty on both sides of meeting Phil "I have got to get more trolleys going" Davy, holding up the Capital City end of Vintage Karting, turned up with his ex Murray Aldridge Dart Twin and Kiwi Kart EX with Rotax power as well as running son Patrick in Yamaha light, Patrick was seen zooming about in the Dart as well! Next Blossom Phil promises to have some more of his "trolleys " for us to see! Maybe his Yamaha RC100 to keep Mark J's company!

Canterbury TQ racer Kate Warren flew up to do laps in Dean Sutton's Mac Minarelli/PCR PP100 ended doing more laps than most others! Youth on her side!

 From the West Coast came Steve Moyes with Gazelle/McCulloch for his 4th Blossom, went home with huge smile! Managed all runs apart form broken plastic wheels was extremely happy with his weekend. Graeme and Dean Sutton, who between themselves brought 4 karts, Dean with DPE DemonX6/PCR PP100 and SGKC Dominator/PCR TS50/3 Rotary and Mac Minarelli, Graeme with Birel T8 with Parilla TT23 engine, joined him. Ian Laird also ventured over and had fun in Mark Jenkinson's Yamaha RC100S.

Nelson was represented by Frank Davidson and Tom McGowern both sharing Frank's Hornet Twin and Martin Deluxe, sadly both karts suffered mechanical ills on Saturday and took no part Sunday,

Levin's team consisted of Tony Wallace and Ian Manssen, Tony debuting his Karlsson Birel with Komet K88 engine he was a very happy man! Great to see one of our Patrons coming along and getting involved. Ian continued to turn laps on his Ohau Dart twin.

Dave Pascoe had a spin in Tony Wallace's Birel/Komet his first ever in a regular style kart, the smile said it all!

Hawkes Bay’s first NZ Sprint Kart champion Garth Schlierike still as keen as ever despite approaching 80 years young had some carb trouble on Saturday but was determined to have his Zip/Komet ready for son Daryle to have ago on Sunday, Garth was seen in Dave Niethe’s Kiwi Kart/Komet K88 late on Sunday, Daryle is now a vintage kart convert.

1980 “Wet spin up Champion” Wayne Phillips stopped by to say hello, ended up with laps in Graeme Sutton’s Birel/Parilla, Huge smile on Wayne’s face said it all! He is looking to have one of his own for Blossom 2012

Neville Overend turned laps on Saturday but had clutch issues later, was able to repair it overnight and returned for Sunday. Hot Rhod Murray brought out 3 of his stable 4 actually a recent acquisition a Zip from the mid 70's and his ever reliable Dart/McCulloch + Kiwi kart with Parilla TT22 and a Martin Deluxe with Parilla power also.

W Mark Jenkinson showed late on Friday with 3 karts Margay/McCulloch MC93 twin, Sharon's Dart/McCulloch MC91B and YamahaRC100S/YamahaKT100S.

The Gough family joined us on Sunday, Reagan turning laps in the Ohau Dart/McCulloch twin once raced by his grandfather.

With 25 + licence issued for the weekend Vintage Karting is in good health.

Lots of visitors to Blossom vintage stopped in to say hi, was great to see them all. Mike Wilson track announcer gave us good airtime; he stopped in with his dad Tony to say hi!

Phil “I have too many trolleys” Davy has scored a Pop Brougham Zip Shadow 100 in a trade

Steve Moyes has picked up a Karlsson Birel from the mid 70’s

Frank Davidson has acquired a Martin Deluxe or Devil (yet to be determined) and an early model Kiwi Kart

With more than 30 karts showing up for 2 days of Vintage Karting in the sun of Hawkes Bay.

Members of the “New Zealand Vintage Kart Register” came from as far south as Canterbury, and north from Tauranga.

Sadly numbers were a little down, due to natural diasters and a world cup happening in NZ.

Several “not seen before” karts showed up for fun in the sun.
