Front Engined Kart

HOME

Built in 1961 by Mike Smith and Bryan Flaherty The photo was taken at the old Daly oval kart circuit promoted by the GKCSA . The meetings were held on Saturday nights and attracted a very large crowd.

They basically copied the Idea from the famous Duffy Livingstone Puch powered 260 CC  which featured in the famous street races in Mexico in the early sixties . They further refined some other Ideas from and English kart powered by a 197 CC Villiers .

The kart used a 125 CC Bantam and was a extremely comfortable to drive .

They believed that they were well ahead of our time but never had the money to fully develop the unit .

Bantam engine  - a real special from our early days

Eventually they gave up on the Idea and converted the frame to a rear engine 250 CC Jawa with the Idea of starting a gearbox class. Bob Williams build another 250 CC gearbox unit using an Adler 250 CC fitted to a modified Wildcat frame .

This unit was built for Dick Bassett of Globe caravan fame for his son John who went onto drive the famous BDA escort 1600 CC touring car which is believed to be still in one piece and now owned by the Stillwell family .
